Honey Hollow Homestead

Honey Hollow Homestead Small scale farm dedicated to providing pasture-raised poultry to the central Ohio market. Plus, it tastes so much better! All our best,
Dan and Jamie

At Honey Hollow Homestead, we believe the best tasting chicken is also the most humanely raised--and processed-- chicken. Once they are ready to leave the brooder, our chickens spend every single day outside, with access to fresh pasture, sunshine, and fresh air. Our family (including our two young children) take the responsibility of giving the chickens the best lives possible very seriously, an

d you will often find the kids out in the pasture feeding them fruit and vegetable snacks. When it is time to process these chickens, we do it by hand, here on the farm. Hand processing not only keeps chemicals like chlorine--often used at multiple times during industrial processing-- and f***l matter out of the meat, but also provides a calm, humane experience for the chickens. Because of Ohio regulations, you do have to come to the farm to pick up your packaged, ready-to-cook chickens, but we love this, because you can see firsthand how your chickens lived. We are proud of our process and proud of how we prioritize the health and happiness of our chickens. We are grateful for their lives and for the sustenance it provides our family, and we are grateful our children will grow up seeing where their food comes from, and knowing that feeding families healthy, nutritious food does not have to come at the costs that are hidden behind industrially raised and processed foods. Thank you for checking out our page, and please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to come see how our process works!

It's that time of year again! We are pleased to be offering our Backyard Chicken Processing Class again. While we have scaled back our pastured chicken business to focus on preserving this precious time with our young kids, we continue to be passionate about teaching others to how raise and process healthy, pastured poultry for their families. It is, by far, the healthiest (and most economical) food we serve at the dinner table (especially as meat prices continue to rise). We enjoy these classes so much and can't wait to meet others who are interested in becoming healthier and more resilient! Follow the link to sign up!

Thank you for your interest! We are offering one class this year, on Saturday, July 12 from 10-12, but you are welcome to stay as long as you like to perfect your processing skills! $25 gets you in, plus one other person, if you have a helper/partner who would like to learn as well, AND you will tak...

We processed 100 chickens in one day yesterday! And we feel… like we processed 100 chickens in one day yesterday πŸ₯±πŸ˜΅πŸ€£. We feel so blessed by our friends (old and new) who helped while they learned, and especially by our children, who stuck it out until the end, fetching chickens and moving them from one tank and just worked incredibly hard since mama wasn’t feeling 100%. Nolan processed 9 chickens start to finish and Emmie did her first one (assisted)! We had another amazing group of people join us to learn how, and despite the day being gruelingly hot, Jamie being not-quite-fully-recovered from a nasty cold (and, did I mention, 100 chickens?) we had an amazing day and are closing out our chicken season for the year, as soon as we get the energy to finish cleaning up. See ya, chickens 2024!
(TBH, we still have 8 left to do 😭😭😭). Maybe tomorrow.

We are so excited to offer our Backyard Chicken Processing Classes for the third year! This is our absolute favorite part of the year. We are excited to meet more amazing people committed to food autonomy, to providing the healthiest food possible to their families, and to learning new (old) skills that increase self-reliance.

Our freezers are full of pasture-raised chicken, plus pastured pork, and we are about to get a whole cow from a local farmer… SO we should be set on meat for the next year! It’s a lot of work, but it is so worth it πŸ“πŸ·πŸ„πŸ½οΈ.

We wrapped us our Processing Class weekend on a high note with another amazing group of really inspiring people. We are beyond grateful, and beyond exhausted 🀣. This wraps up our very short chicken season! We cut it short because of an incredible work opportunity Dan was given, and while it is bittersweet, ending our season this early gives us a lot more time to focus our energies on our family and on some things that need to be done around the homestead. We will still have our Harvest Party in the fall, and hope some class participants can make it back! I am already dreaming big dreams for next year (who is surprised? πŸ˜†) but also hoping to keep things in balance. Thank you to everyone who came out, and if you missed the class this year, keep an eye out next summer!

Today we met some awesome people-including an 88 year-old veteran neighbor who just stopped by when he saw our processing class sign to β€œlearn a few things” ❀️🀣. Most of our older male neighbors tell us that they used to be the one in charge of going out back to kill a chicken for dinner when they were little boys, and this was true for him as well. It’s crazy to think this used to be common knowledge for families, something they’d do once a week to make dinner, and something the children would participate in. We are grateful and humbled to be able to teach this lost skill to others, helping them to become more connected to their food and be a little more self-sufficient, and so hopeful for the future as we teach our children to do this work with us. And we are so grateful to be building our community, of both those who live within a few miles of us but also with those who have traveled 3 hours (each way!) to be here. What a great day β€οΈπŸ“β€οΈπŸ“β€οΈπŸ“

We are loving our two matching chicken tractors this year! They’re super light to move and have plenty of room for the chickens to graze all the way up to their full size.
