2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer, and throughout the year we are proud to recognize the women shaping agriculture in Calvert County. This month, we are spotlighting Mary Bowen, owner of Browsing Green Goats and Prosperity Acres.
Mary represents a growing movement of women in agriculture who are combining innovation, environmental stewardship, education and entrepreneurship to make a positive impact in their communities. Through targeted goat grazing, she provides municipalities, schools, cemeteries, conservation projects and landowners with an environmentally friendly alternative to herbicides and heavy machinery for invasive vegetation management. Her work helps protect waterways, wildlife habitats and sensitive landscapes throughout Maryland and Virginia while promoting regenerative land management practices.
A strong advocate for conservation, Mary is passionate about protecting the Chesapeake Bay watershed through sustainable vegetation management that reduces chemical runoff and supports biodiversity. Her projects have included environmentally sensitive sites, public spaces and historic properties where ecological responsibility and preservation are essential.
Mary is also the founder of City to Soil Farm Animal Science, a faith-based educational program designed for homeschool families and co-op communities. Through hands-on learning experiences, she helps children and families learn about agriculture, environmental science, stewardship and food systems. She is especially proud of inspiring the next generation to value agriculture, conservation and responsible land stewardship.
Like many women in agriculture, Mary wears many hats. In addition to being a farmer and business owner, she is an educator and advocate for sustainable agriculture. Outside of farming, she volunteers with her Border Collie, Gracie, at a local nursing home, where they provide companionship, encouragement and joy through animal-assisted interactions and scripture reading.
Mary values the opportunity to represent Calvert County with professionalism, resilience, faith and a deep commitment to preserving the land for future generations. Her work demonstrates the important role women play in advancing innovation, conservation, education and environmental advocacy in agriculture.
