Today I jumped in the truck with these two to deliver a show calf in the East Valley, and somewhere between the miles, the trailer, and watching them do what they do, I found myself thinking about how we got here.
Sis came to us when she was 10 years old and asked to show cattle. We thought she was too young. We had absolutely no experience with show cattle. And, honestly, we wondered if we could even afford it.
She got her first steer at 12, and Bubba followed two years later.
Somewhere along the way, Sis told us that the two of them were going to breed show cattle one day.
Fast forward to today…
Bubba is driving the truck and trailer, and Sis is standing alongside a first-year showman, going over calf care and helping her get started on her cattle journey.
If you would have asked me back then if saying yes to my kids' dream of being in the cattle barn would eventually put us in this moment, I don't know that I would have believed you.
Their goal was always bigger than just raising and selling cattle.
They wanted to provide good calves, broke for showmanship, to first-year kids—giving them a great experience and helping them build the foundation of their own cattle journey.
And today, watching that vision come full circle is pretty special.
They are both working 55+ hours a week at their day jobs, and Sis is running her boutique on top of that. There are definitely days I wonder how they manage the workload they have taken on.
But a wise man told us when we first started this cattle journey:
“We are using cattle to raise good humans.”
As each year passes and I watch things come full circle, I understand more and more what he meant.
The cattle were never just about the cattle.
They were about responsibility.
Hard work.
Commitment.
Learning to keep going when things get hard.
And eventually, having the opportunity to pass those lessons on to someone else.
Today, I couldn't be more proud of these two.
And I couldn't be more excited to watch a new showman begin her own journey.
