Feeding the pigs is a big chore. Being free fed means having to go out multiple times a day in the early, quick growing months. But, it also means lots of opportunities to get in the pen and play with them, which seems to make up for the extra chores.

Yup… some good excuses for parts of it, some same old same old too.

It’s more of a problem with thinking I am super woman while I’m actually just a regular woman and can only do so many things.

BUT, we’re still getting things done and still in good shape to run some chickens to be ready for sale in April!!

Lambs are being processed this next week and we are continuing to add more animals to the farm. 🙌🏼

O’Kelly Family Farms was waiting for a shipment of Chickens that seems to have gotten lost. These are the losses I hate the most. It’s what makes me want to stop everything and just start breeding chickens for local sales. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Feeling a little sad.
Hoping to get more in soon but feeling pretty bad about this. It’s a really sad reality of agriculture today. It’s part of why we need more farmers, to fill the gaps and keep post offices as much out of the business as possible. Wish it was different and hopeful for change in the future as more and more young people look to homesteading and farming to save their health and their sanity. A much welcomed change when it comes.

I mean, we are ordering flower seeds this year, but what I really mean, is of course we are making plans for a great year and we will put our blood sweat and tears into making good things happen in our lives.

Yes! One of my favorite things is when someone shows me what they are growing or raising in their own yard. When we were younger and lived in an apartment we had a compost bin for kitchen scraps right next to the front door (doesn’t smell if you do it right) and when we moved in with my parents for a bit, we had a garden bag on the back porch where we grew potatoes! Anyone can grow SOMETHING! Anyone can have something to start learning more about agriculture. Wherever you live, whatever it is, it’s a start.

Carbon sequestration, what’s that? Simply put, it’s the interaction between cow muck and the cow herself treading in dead grass to the soil, and the worms and other biota in the soil turning the muck and dead grass into organic matter (full of carbon) and enhancing the soils, increasing their carbon storage. This process will not occur under annual cropping growing crops and vegetables, in fact the carbon content of soils under annually cropped fields is slowly dropping from year to year.
