Wow, this post is heavy but the time has come to share some big news with all of you. As much as we would love to continue to bring Five Dot Ranch beef to you, we have come to the difficult realization that it is time to end this chapter in our book. For us as a family, this decision feels bittersweet. We are confident, yet sad to let it go. In some ways this decision feels out of our control, it’s been a roller coaster over the last 17 years (California politics and legislation, a recession, crazy inflation, drought, flooding, earthquakes, fire, a global pandemic… just to name a few 😅), but we feel deep in our souls that this is the right move for our family and cattle operation moving forward. We have poured our hearts and souls into every aspect of this business and have maintained our commitment to quality, honesty, and integrity. We are so proud of the product we have provided and the reputation we have built.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all of you who have supported us throughout the years. Your patronage, kind words, and loyalty are what kept us at it for the last 17 years. We have learned so much from our customers and created lifelong friendships with many. It has been an honor to have a place in your butcher cases, store shelves and at your dinner tables. Thank you for letting us share our story with you and joining us on this journey. This appreciation also extends to our employees who stood with us and worked tirelessly to bring this product to you. From the cowboys to the butchers, they were instrumental in our success over the years.

Although we are ending our branded beef program, our legacy as 7th Generation California cattle ranchers lives on as we continue our land and cattle operations. Right now we are busy raising the 8th generation and hope to bring them into the business someday.

Wishing you the best, friends. Thank you for everything!

P.S. As we wind down our branded beef program, this also includes our mail order program, so we will be shipping online orders while supplies last! This may be the last chance to stock up your freezer with our beef product so be sure to get your orders in now!

Introducing the Petit Tender- now available to shop online!

If you saw our stories yesterday, you may have had the chance to guess what this cut is prior to our launch today. As it turns out, it was a lot harder than we thought because the number one answer we got was Tenderloin- and we can understand the confusion because they look a lot alike! However, unless you know your beef really well, you most likely have never heard of this cut because it is a rarity in the meat world, or you may have seen it called the Teres Major, Mock Tender, Chuck Shoulder Tender, or Bistro Filet.

While there are many names for it, we prefer the Petit Tender because it resembles a small, petit tenderloin. This small, lean steak is cut from the shoulder of the animal and requires a great deal of time, labor, and skill to cut. Because of this, many large processors simply don’t have the time to cut this steak, which is why chances of finding it at a local, small producer or mom-pop shop are much higher than at your box grocery stores.

Give this cut a try today, and let us know what you think! Shop at www.shopfivedotranch.com.

Our family has been rooted in California since 1852- that’s all we know, and although its becoming increasingly harder, it’s the only place we can imagine being right now.

We’ve worked hard to have 100% of our operations in California- all of our cattle are born, raised, and harvested here, and we're proud to be able to produce a truly local product that represents our bountiful state.

While we don’t have the means to have a slaughter and harvest facility of our own, we work closely with a small, family-owned facility based out of Merced, CA, which has been processing our cattle for over 15 years. Because we practice Temple Grandin’s humane, low-stress handling principles in care, transport, and slaughter of livestock for our operation, it was crucial for us to find a facility that also prioritized these.

To learn more about the principles we have implemented toward low-stress handling and care, visit Temple Grandin’s livestock website at www.grandin.com.

We spent a better part of the weekend checking feed down in the valley. When we do this, we look at a few things, such as new grass growth, how low it’s already been grazed, and the remaining moisture in the soil. These factors help us predict our available feed in the coming months and what we plan to do with the rotation of our cattle.

Even after all of this, the weather remains unpredictable, and we just have to take one day at a time to determine what is best for our cattle and operation. While we started our winter strong with rain in November and December, January, on the other hand, had zero precipitation, unfortunately leaving us with a foreseeable dry spring and summer ahead of us. All we can do is hope for more rain in the forecast!

Although winter is considered our “slow season,” we remain quite busy here on the ranch! Our responsibilities just shift this time of year due to the weather, feed, and available resources. Instead of spending time horseback on the range gathering cattle or farming hay, we are breaking ice, on the feeding crew, or doing some much-needed maintenance around the ranch.

Snow up at the ranch and green grass down in the valley!

Since we graze cattle throughout 6 different counties here in Northern California we get the best of both worlds! The cattle pictured in the snow are at our main ranch in Lassen County and the cattle enjoying the green grass are down in Napa County.
