This is a section of our Shale Hills Farm in Sussex County, NJ that we call “Sitting Rock Hill.” The mountains in the distance are home to the Mountain Creek Ski area in Vernon Township. Our red barn to the left of photo was built in 1880. At Christmas time we decorate the lower level. Our farm animals are very much into the Christmas spirit!

Rainy spring in NJ this year sure results in lots of new growth on our Christmas trees. These are 9’ Concolor Fir and Norway Spruce.

Hard to believe, but it’s true. We have been growing Christmas trees on our Sussex County, NJ farm for 63 years. It all began as a way to prevent soil erosion on a hilly section of our land. Planted some evergreen seedlings to hold back the soil. Eight years later, the word got out that we had some “Christmas trees.” Frankly, they were just Charlie Brown trees. But folks wanted them. It was then that we realized there was a real demand for a farm where people could go and cut-their-own tree. The rest is history.

The aroma of fresh plowed earth elicits hope for a great crop. The fragrance of fresh mowed hay means success. So the answer is: it’s a toss up.

Real Christmas trees produce massive amounts of oxygen. Each acre of Christmas trees provides enough oxygen for 18 people. When a tree is cut for your Christmas, an average of three seedlings take its place. This keeps the land open and rural. It’s the Circle of Life. Real farm raised trees benefit Sussex County……and America in so many ways!
