This is a section of our Shale Hills Farm in Sussex County that we call “Sitting Rock Hill.” The mountains in the distance are home to the Mountain Creek Ski area in Vernon Township. Our red barn to the left of photo was built in 1880. At Christmas time we decorate the lower level. Our farm animals are very much into the Christmas spirit!

Hard to believe, but it’s true. We have been growing Christmas trees on our Sussex County, NJ farm for 64 years. It all began as a way to prevent soil erosion on a hilly section of our land. Planted some evergreen seedlings to hold back the soil. Eight years later, the word got out that we had some “Christmas trees.” Frankly, they were just Charlie Brown trees. But folks wanted them. It was then that we realized there was a real demand for a farm where people could go and cut-their-own tree. The rest is history. Shale Hills Farm

Yep. Winter is on its way. Today I saw the first Canada Geese formation over our Sussex County farm...heading south. You know, if I were a goose, I wouldn't waste my energy. I would just stay down south all year long. Likely, at Epcot in Disney World. No one would shoot me. And the tourists would keep me well fed with pieces of breakfast danish from the Norway Bakery and hot dog rolls from the American pavillion. If......I were a goose.
