ALL ABOARD! BIG BOY 4014 CALIFORNIA COMMON ARRIVES THIS FRIDAY!

Brewed as part of our America 250 celebration Big Boy 4014 California Common is inspired by two pieces of American ingenuity: the b**r that helped launch the modern craft brewing movement and the largest operational steam locomotive in the world.

The story dates back to early California brewers who fermented l***r yeast at warmer temperatures when refrigeration was hard to come by. The style was famously revived by Fritz Maytag after he purchased San Francisco’s struggling Anchor Brewery in 1965 and transformed Anchor Steam into a b**r that would help spark America’s craft b**r revolution.

Our version takes its name from Big Boy No. 4014 the massive steam locomotive built in 1941 and still operating today. Like its namesake this b**r is a celebration of American craftsmanship. It pours a clear amber with a creamy white head while toasted and pale barley malts create a rich smooth base for Northern Brewer hops with earthy woody notes and a subtle hint of mint. A touch of fruitiness from the yeast rounds everything out for a balanced easy-drinking finish.

At 5.5% ABV it’s malty without being heavy flavorful without being overpowering and especially fitting for a brewery that’s never more than a couple of sips from the railroad tracks.
