Roof restored, hay is saved and ready for another load this afternoon. Life is better with neighbors and family!!

When it rains, it pours!
Tuesday night’s storm came with a little twist. That barn had 200 bales of fresh hay stacked inside, and the strike must have hit near the end of the storm —only the top two inches of the upper bales were wet. Still, the entire stack had to be moved and spread to dry.

On our farm, we have many Live Oak trees, but one ancient tree stands out like a legend — the great live oak nestled in the bend of the path leading to the river. When Hurricane Bertha struck in 1996, it toppled the tree, but it landed on one of its massive limbs instead of falling completely. Our grandfather Amos called it “the tree on its elbow.” They covered the uprooted end with soil, and today it still rests on that elbow, continuing to thrive. A quiet wonder awaits anyone standing beneath its canopy: beds of Resurrection Fern spread across the broad limbs, springing to life after every rain.

The horses on the farm enjoy the cool shade and cover from a storm of the great oaks.
