Renaissance Polyculture? What the heck is that? First of all, it is a safe and non-judgmental place for all people of any age, race, gender, orientation, or any other modifier people like to assign to themselves. (Except for pipeline surveyors and installers!!!!) It is a place where people can learn how to love the land again and discover ways to heal both the earth and themselves. This land was p
reviously a hog farm and a repair shop for a used car lot. The word "Renaissance" is used as "a situation or period of time when there is a new interest in something that has not been popular in a long time" and "a period of new growth or activity". This reflects the desire to farm in ways that go against the industrialized models as well as heal the land from its previous abuses. It is also a nod to the owners love of Renaissance Festivals as well as sci-fi/fantasy things like Doctor Who and LOTR. Here we work to blend the farming ethics of yesteryear's family farm with modern advances. "Polyculture" is used to describe how we are different than the current industrialized standard of monoculture which relies heavily upon petroleum and chemicals. Our polyculture will include trees, bees, livestock, grass, vegetables, understory shrubs, vines, and native plantings to support pollinators and butterflies. We use methods that build both the soil and its abundant micro-biota instead of drenching it in an ongoing escalation of chemical warfare. Will it ever be a perfect model of sustainability? I doubt it but I hope it will be several steps in the right direction from harmful chemicals and cruel confinement practices. Please join us on our journey!
