It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a chastising message about how we should be doing 100% grass-fed with our dairy cows, so I figured I would address it for the sake of transparency.
At Majors Farm TX, we believe in being open about how we raise our animals and why we make the choices we do.
One question we sometimes hear is: “Why aren’t your cows 100% grass-fed?”
The honest answer comes down to two important factors: our Southeast Texas climate and modern dairy genetics.
🌾 Our Climate
Southeast Texas has intense heat, humidity, and periods where pasture quality drops dramatically. During the hottest months and certain wet seasons, grass alone simply doesn’t provide the consistent nutrition dairy cows need to stay healthy and productive. Supplementing with a balanced ration helps ensure our cows get the energy, minerals, and protein they require year-round.
🐄 Modern Dairy Genetics
Today’s dairy cows are bred to produce much more milk than cattle generations ago. While pasture is a valuable part of their diet, most modern dairy genetics need additional nutrition to maintain body condition, support milk production, and keep the animals healthy.
💚 Animal Health Comes First
Our girls have free-choice hay and pasture available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so they can graze and eat naturally whenever they want, plus supplemental feed allowing us to care for our cows responsibly while producing high-quality milk. In addition, they receive a carefully balanced daily ration of TMR (total mixed ration) that is 100% grass-based and includes a high percentage of alfalfa hay to provide the extra nutrition dairy cows need to stay healthy and productive.
Transparency matters to us. We’re proud of how we raise our animals, and we’re always happy to answer questions about life on the farm.
