Can you find the real Kunekune?
You didn't? Good, because there isn't one in this group of photos. Yet, all of these pigs are being advertised in our area as Kunekune!
Some of the sellers will tell you they're mixed if you ask, but most people don't.
Just because it's a colored pig, doesn't mean it's a Kunekune.
Just because it's got wattles, doesn't mean it's a Kunekune.
Just because it's got a short snout, doesn't mean it's a Kunekune.
If they own multiple breeds, it doesn't mean it's a Kunekune (boars are sneaky).
A reminder before you rush out and buy winter and spring piglets.
Do your research before you buy. A good breeder will be happy to answer your questions regardless of whether you buy from them. They should also ask you questions as to what your intentions are should you purchase an animal from them. They know their stock and can recommend an animal that will meet your needs.
The piglets should be socialized. Even if it is going to be a meat pig, it should be socialized. It makes things safer for pig and buyer. It also means less adrenaline in your meat.
Kunekune are pasture pigs. If the piglets aren't not being fed hay, they may never eat it.
Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. When that animal fails to meet the ideal you have in mind the regret of purchasing the cheapest "Kunekune" you could will taste worse than boar taint.
