Our latest four calves have spent the week in the house paddock with their dams, for some handling and training. We bought them from Deontrell Livestock Farm and we highly recommend them, they have healthy and awesome mini Highlands.
The family came to visit, which was the perfect opportunity for the calves to meet kids! The calves loved meeting our niece and nephews, having lots of brushes, treats, & going for walks. Now they have gone back out bush to be cows for a while and grow up some more, before they come back in for weaning.
These little fluffballs are going to make awesome pets, and we are pretty happy with how the heifers are growing out too!

We try to make the yards a positive experience for our coos, as often as we can.

Every time our cows come in, everyone moves through the race, and they all get a few minutes of brushing in the crush.

This is Moofie, our newest cow. She is a very sweet girl who had never been in a crush before we got her, so she found it a bit stressful at first - but she LOVES the brush, and now wants to be the first one into the yards for her turn!

We are lucky as our yards are located centrally to a few of our paddocks - so we make a point of moving them via the yards when it's time to rotate paddocks.

The positive associations with the yards minimises their stress when it's time for the less pleasant necessities like vaccinations, drenching, or marking calves. It also means that the younger cows have plenty of practice negotiating the rails of the race, crush and headbail, and learn to turn their head to fit their growing horns through.

Our girls are always happy to bring themselves in. They hear me opening gates and coming trotting in when I call them - there's rarely any need for anyone to follow up behind.

As well as making it a pleasant experience for the cows, the time we spend making our cows want to come in the yards pays off in how much time we save by not trying to muster and push cows... especially with so much rain and mud in our paddocks at the moment!
