Breed With a Purpose
Breeding to the Breed Standard isn’t about expecting perfection overnight. It’s about having a standard to work toward and making thoughtful decisions with each pairing and the outlook of future generations well before the actual breeding takes place.
We do this by evaluating structure, type, condition, color, temperament, and the traits that make each breed what it is, every time. Then we make breeding decisions with the next generation in mind.
For us, success and suitability isn’t simply producing more rabbits. It’s producing better rabbits.
That means understanding where our current brood animals are strong, recognizing where they need improvement, and selecting pairings that complement one another and the standard rather than breeding simply because two rabbits are available.
It’s not perfection. It’s progress.
This is especially important to us when working with rare and heritage rabbit breeds. Conservation isn’t just about maintaining and achieving numbers; it’s about preserving the characteristics, type, temperament, and diversity that make these breeds worth preserving in the first place. Responsible breeders have an important role in keeping those genetics healthy and those breeds viable.
When working with a rare breed, a popular commercial breed, a heritage breed, or simply striving to improve your own line, ethical breeding means having a purpose behind every litter.
Breeding quality stock takes patience. It takes record keeping, observation, honesty, and a willingness to make difficult choices. Most importantly, it requires us to look beyond the rabbit in front of us and think about the future of the breed and the breeders that will follow far beyond what we are doing now.
