Farm life is a great way for kids to grow up. But it can certainly be hard on them...and on Momma. My soft heart is a little sad today. Our beautiful little girl, "Spice," (LTLBHEAVEN Pumpkin Spicetini) went to a new home today. I'm excited for her to have a new friend where she will be only one of two goats on a horse farm and will be spoiled as such! But I'm sad for us to say goodbye. I know this comes with the territory...but it doesn't make it easier.

The girls made the decision to move Spice to another home due to her color being an issue for her breed. I remember seeing her still in the sac and thinking...that looks white!! She was a very light color. Throughout the last 20 months, her color changed a bunch...sometimes to almost black. The girls continued to show her because, well, we still had her and she was making the trips with us, so might as well. When her color was not so off, she did well. Spice brought us our very first Best Junior Doe in Show at a show with a strong Ober showing and 138 juniors! But alas, her color was not going to conform. We talked about keeping her, breeding her and seeing if her babies would be color-conforming...because she otherwise was really nice. But, the girls didn't want to keep a doe that wouldn't make it to shows. The other option...switching her over to Recorded Grade and breeding 'back up' to American Oberhasli. But with several shows that we do, the girls already have a conflict with showing their hogs, they didn't want to add another breed to the goat shows.

So we waited. I saw a post of someone looking for an Ober preferably. Not to show, but to be a companion and pet. And they are just eight minutes away!!! We got in touch, and it was a fit!!! We are happy that she will be close to us while we are here and we can go visit.

In other news, as with most of the rest of the goat breeders, we have started our breeding season. We have four out of six that were bred confirmed! Two did not take, one has not come into heat and one the girls decided to retire as she was starting to have some discomfort getting up on the stand and her last pregnancy...she acted like she was carrying quads from about 30 days on. So, she will have a comfortable, happy-go-lucky retirement. Though she wasn't terribly happy to not get a date when she was ready!!

Currently due in February, 2027:
CH Owl-Ridge LJ Alabama Slam
LTLBHEAVEN Love Fern
LTLBHEAVEN Midori
White-Birch-Acres Red Oak

Hopefully we will be blessed with three more confirmations in the near future!

So busy, but have to go back to some highlights from the Dutchess County Fair as so much happened and it is one of our most favorite places to be!

Have to speak more of when Sienna won All Species Master Showman. Sienna worked so hard, she practiced (right up until just before the competition started), she studied, she committed, she persisted. We are so very proud of Sienna and will remember this moment as a wonderful memory!!

This was such an incredible accomplishment that Sienna had set out as a goal for herself at the beginning of the 4-H year. To reach this honor was a major highlight. The competition was stiff, especially with the debonaire, lovable, commanding presence of Bobby standing next to Sienna throughout.

We are so grateful to all who worked with Sienna through this. All who helped, all who cheered, all who supported, all who loved.

We are blessed!!!

Such a good time for us at The Great New York State Fair. We are so grateful that we got this opportunity to be here again this year. One final positive for us, milk test results.

LTLBHEAVEN Crème de Cocoa, highest butterfat award! And this coming off of an aborted pregnancy that we weren’t sure she was going to come into milk at all! Most judges have commented on her that she should really be a stunner when she’s had a full term freshening.

CH Owl-Ridge LJ Alabama Slam highest protein award! That’s two years in a row that she has received that award here.

CH Owl-Ridge R Tias Sambuca second highest overall milk score.

White-Birch-Acres Mint Crumble fourth highest overall.

A Great end to the summer for us. We are blessed!!

One more very cool achievement for us from The Great New York State Fair…Premier Oberhasli Exhibitor!

It was a long trip and crazy logistics to get here…but the efforts paid off…big time!! We can not thank Jennifer, Nate, Catie and Maria enough for not only allowing us to bring our goats to their place as a holding period until we could get them in at state, they also showed ALL of our juniors for us while the girls showed their hogs because of course, they showed at exactly the same time.

The big highlights:
*Kendra Intermediate Champion Hog Showman AND Champion Master Hog Showman
*Sienna Senior Champion Hog Showman AND Reserve Master Hog Showman
*Three of our four hogs took first in their classes. One took second.
*Nala Champion Crossbred Breeding Gilt AND Supreme Champion Breeding Gilt
*White-Birch-Acres Red Oak Junior Champion
*LTLBHEAVEN Love Fern Reserve Junior Champion
*White-Birch-Acres Mint Crumble Senior Champion
*Almost all of the classes that our goats were in, they had a first place showing.

And the kicker…there was a class for “Over-the-Hill Hog Showmanship. Everyone convinced me to go in. I traded Jessa my slides for her cowboy boots and went in the ring with my bright pink tee shirt and leggings…not exactly showmanship attire…but I WORKED IT!!! I walked away with first place, beating out some seasoned showman…there were five or six of us in the ring!! Couldn’t embarrass my kids, right?!?!

I’m TIRED. Home from Dutchess County Fair at 4:30am Monday morning. Tuesday into Wednesday Fourteen hours of driving back and forth to get goats and pigs to state fair (BIG, HUGE thank you to Jennifer, Nate, Maria and Katie Funk!!!). Then another round trip to bring pigs home but return for the rest of the goats showing.

Worth the tough times to make the memories.

Thank you goes out to the Funks and Half Barn Farm for all of the help, to Top Notch Livestock for the wonderful breeding of Nala, and to so many who have helped us make this trip happen!!!

We are blessed!!!

How is the summer flying by so fast??? Cannot believe that it is August already. We went to the Ulster County Fair this weekend and had a great time. It is a favorite for the kids—the fair itself is smaller than our big fair so a little more ‘homey’ I guess is a good description of it. The girls love being able to roam the fairgrounds, ride some rides and spend time with friends. We had nice weather most of the time and the girls and goats had a fantastic showing in some very large classes.

Highlights for our Ulster show:

Under seasoned judge Bob Bartholomew, Jessa took first place out of a BIG Intermediate showmanship class of 15, with her good friend Delaney standing right next to her, both incredible showmen.

Sienna bested her senior class of 9 where competition was super strong, with Kendra pulling up second next to her older sister.

Starting the day for us in breed classes, LTLBHEAVEN Tulip and LTLBHEAVEN Wild Wh***ey stood first and second in their class of eight. LTLBHEAVEN Dizzy Olive was in front in first in her class of nine. In the Senior Yearling class, another class of nine, our four does took the front of the line; White-Birch-Acres Red Oak, LTLBHEAVEN Love Fern, LTLBHEAVEN Midori and LTLBHEAVEN Pumpkin Spicetini were first through fourth respectively. It was really awesome to have five out of six of the Junior Champion lineup. Sienna’s elegant Oak, who was just looking beyond lovely the entire day, took Junior Champion with Jessa’s Dizzy Olive named Reserve!

In the senior show, Kendra’s White-Birch-Acres Mint Crumble, a first freshening three-year-old has really come into her own after a bit of a rough start to the season. She was first in her class of five, went on to be named Senior Champion and Grand Champion!
Stepping into the Champion Challenge class, Crumble held her own coming in second to Jessa’s CH Owl-Ridge LJ Alabama Slam. Allie has needed some time to pick up steam this season, but was looking great this weekend, taking Best of Breed! When she stood in line for the Best Doe in Show lineup, we were incredibly pleased to hear that the decision came down to two does…the Recorded Grade…and the Oberhasli—our very own Allie! Though she did not walk away with that purple ribbon, it was a thrill to know that she was next in line. Unfortunately, the ADGA rosettes didn’t arrive in time, so no pics with them.

Looking forward to a few more shows to come this season. We are so very grateful for all that we get to participate in and all of the friends who are like family that we get to spend time with. We are so very blessed.

Woo-hoo, we are getting to posting before a month passes by!!

This past weekend we went to the Dutchess County Youth Dairy Goat Show at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. It has been a staple in our show seasons since the kids started with dairy goats in 4-H with Sally Graybill. Dubbed ‘The Fruit Snack Show’ where the kids all get fruit snacks when they leave the ring from their Showmanship classes adds to the memory!

The kids had a good time with friends—both from the goat world and the cow world as the Black & White show was run at the fairgrounds at the same time, offering additional fun for our kids to get to spend time with more friends.

Kids and goats alike did well in the ring. Jessa bested a group of 17 to take first place in her Showmanship class! Kendra and Sienna came in 2nd and 3rd respectively in their class and all learned a lot from a good judge who really took her time and explained SO much to the kids as they went along. Helen Powers Light, we are very grateful for your shared knowledge!!

Goat highlights:
White-Birch-Acres Mint Crumble, who is Kendra’s three-year-old first-freshener as she didn’t take her first year of breeding, we think due to being a bit…hefty… Crumble topped her class taking first out of five.

In the large Oberhasli dry-yearling class, Sienna’s White-Birch-Acres Red Oak looked stunning. She landed in 1st place and took Junior Champion! LTLBHEAVEN Midori stood second in the class of nine and received Reserve Junior Champion.

In the zero-to-six-month-old class, eleven entered the ring. Jessa’s LTLBHEAVEN Dizzy Olive and LTLBHEAVEN Bombay Sapphire landed in first and second place respectively.

A fun day with friends!
