Last of the Cabbages

We planted out the last of the cabbage starts for the year early last week. Winnie didn't want to, because she wanted to go with Mommy in the car, not with Daddy in the truck. Fortunately, a ride in the wheelbarrow can still make her feel better. The cabbages now cover about 2/3 of the 70 foot row. We have been having more slug pressure than usual, so we put down some sluggo....

Hard Copies

We have a few hard copies of the book on hand now, available for $10. Ryan can get them in bulk at printing cost, so if you don't want to support Amazon any more than you can help, and you happen to live local, hit us up if you would like a slightly lower cost, supporting the author more directly, and supporting Jeff Bezos much less.

Coyote Pup

Saw a coyote pup in the field again. Time to bait the trap. Right on a coyote trail, with a chunk of pig liver. That ought to do it. But it didn't. Something tripped the trap, and then dug underneath the back of the trap and pulled the liver through the bars piece by piece. Sounds like we need to set up Papa's game cams again.

Lackerli

It is that time of year, again! Time to make Christmas Cookies! Or, at least, start the process! Some Swiss cookies, like Lackerli, benefit from several months of aging to reach their full potential. There is no risk of them "going bad" because this particular cookie is roughly 50% honey and sugar by volume. With a healthy dose of cherry brandy....

Widening the Driveway

This was last week. I don't remember what day, but with the remodel getting ready to get underway and CiderFest coming up in a month, we need to widen out the driveway and free up some driving/parking space. We got that big load of logs this summer, which still hadn't split and stacked itself. Now that Adam has his RV parked next to the shop, this makes the driveway very narrow to get back to the barn area....

Making Friendly Friendly

Evie wants to take a sheep to fair next year, so she has started working with one of this year's lambs. She chose "Friendly" (so named because she didn't run away as fast as her sister when the kids tried to pet her as a baby) because Snow is too small and doesn't have good katahdin hair, and Cookie is the result of inbreeding, and so is destined for eating, and Friendly's twin, Star, is not as Friendly....

Falling Stars in the Basement

These are the moments I live for on the farm. Projects are fun. Projects for the kids are good. Projects with the kids, are as close to heaven on earth as I have found outside the Mass.
