Update regarding the old Faith Dairy site:
The Summit-Waller Community Association contacted the Puyallup Tribe a couple of times over the past several months. They received the following information via phone conversations with tribal staff.
-The tribe continues to acquire property within the reservation boundaries and will continue to do so. As other parcels come up for sale, the tribe will likely have an interest in those, particularly larger parcels. The tribe may purchase property in the future anywhere within the reservation boundaries with no immediate or long-term plans. For a map of the reservation boundaries visit: http://wikimapia.org/10376205/Puyallup-Indian-Reservation
-In the short-term, the old Faith Dairy site will house the tribal cultural department in the old residence on the property; the police department will continue to use the garage for vehicle maintenance; the dairy will not be reused due to antiquated equipment; and the site might be used for temporary camping for future events.
-The property is in tribal trust so local land use laws do not apply and may be ignored or changed at the tribe’s discretion although it could keep within character of the surrounding community.
-Long-term plans have not been developed but will likely remain culturally focused (i.e. longhouse, cultural center, museum, etc.) and house cultural events.
-At this time there are no casinos, fireworks sales or homeless encampments planned for the site. If housing were proposed it would likely be single-family or duplex style similar to other tribal housing in the area.
-The community and general public is encouraged to follow the tribe’s page at https://www.facebook.com/PuyallupTribeOfIndians/ and website at http://www.puyallup-tribe.com/ for future information as they relate to this and other sites.
Please share with those who have an interest in the community or who are not on Facebook. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the SWCA board members.
