Elderflowers 🌸

When we first moved to Tennessee one of the first things I ordered were elderberry bushes.

Little did I know, the whole property is covered in wild elderberry. 🙃

The four bushes I planted have been broken by the pigs and eaten down by the goats; good thing they bounce back every year!

Since the apothecary is still full from last year’s berries I was able to harvest many of the beautiful flowers!

They have been dried to add all their medicinal goodness to my tea blends, added to honey, sprinkled on veggies, and cordial used to create soda!

These little flowers are so fun to work with and I look forward to all the goodness in the years to come!

Nigel 🤍

Simply, a goatee appreciation post.

A lot of times the bucks fur looks rough, they snip each others goatees off and do all the buck things; rut will do that to the best of them.

But at this moment in time, Nigel’s goatee looks glorious!

It is full and blows in the wind like the patriarch he is.

He stands proud and is always happy to see us.

Snapdragons 💕

The last several weeks of rain we had took out most of the snaps, pretty sure the next several weeks of rain will finish them off.

You can make the best plans and some things are simply out of your control.

Always find the beauty while it’s in front of you.

It was the first time I was able to use my vintage flower frog vase.

It holds 48 stems!

It was also the first time I used the pitcher that was thrifted in Missouri recently.

My mom was a huge Princess House fan and she had many pieces including one of these pitchers, I’ve been looking for one for years.

It felt right to use it as a vase first as my mom loved flowers, healing comes in such unexpected ways.

Ducklings 🦆

The hens made a nest and diligently sat together for weeks.

Truth be told, they’ve had several nests over the last few years with no success.

I decided our little flock of four was going to be the end of our duck experience; I was sure this nest would also fail.

To my surprise there was a single duckling in the nest one evening, the other four hatched the next day!

The yellow pair are Welsh Harlequins, one hen and one drake. The black ducklings are a Cayuga/Welsh Harlequin mix.

The Cayuga hen has a nest of her own in some brush under a set of trees near the house. Hopefully she will hatch some as well.

I forgot how much I enjoy ducklings.

Sometimes the to•do list takes over and I forget to enjoy what we’re creating here.

To stop what I’m doing to walk down to the pond, second coffee in hand, and simply enjoy the life I’ve been given.

Ducklings are the perfect reminder.

Garlic 🧄

The garlic was harvested, it was a bit early but rain for the next week and a half was a good enough reason.

I second guessed myself when the sun was shining the next morning although that quickly faded as the buckets of water started to fall.

The largest heads are saved each year for fall planting and I’ve had the same stock for many years.

Silver Rose is the best long term storage variety I grow.
Some of this year’s harvest were planted from garlic braids that were stored over a year in the pantry!

Hard neck is another must grow as we enjoy our scape purée every winter.

I have another set of cloves I grow that my brother sent from Gilroy years ago. I don’t know the variety, I simply know they smell like home.

Mike happened to be in the Bay Area last fall and took a short drive down to Gilroy to pick up a few new heads to my utter delight!

I don’t know their variety either, they grew wonderfully and the garden has smelled pleasantly garlicky for the last few weeks.

There is nothing quite like Gilroy garlic.

Alpine 🐐

It’s lovely to get back into the cheese making rhythm.

Alpine cheese is a new one for me and my oh my does it smell wonderful; very mild with a hint of sweetness.

As always, I’m amazed that a few simple ingredients can make a wide variety of flavors and textures.

Cheese is incredible.
