Has anyone planted a chaos garden this year?
I finally decided to give it a try using a bag of "15 bean soup mix" and compost we made with quail 💩
I most definitely didn't expect such a good germination rate for a soup mix😂 and I wasn't sure the compost was ready, but they are clearly loving it!

Also some other budget friendly odd things you can plant:
Shelf stable dried goods!
Popcorn kernels
Chia seeds
Sesame seeds
Coriander
Bird seed
And of course, any kind of dried legumes

Fresh scrap goods!
Lettuce cores
Tomato seeds
Melon seeds
Pumpkin seeds
Garlic cloves
Potatoes
Carrot tops (collect seeds)

Can you think of any others?

We hatched these from another breeder and they did not meet our standards to be included in our breeding program. They are a good size, offering for those who are willing to work on them or as a backyard meat bird.

💵Cash- we allow cash but do not reserve due to many “no shows”. Meaning if someone pays with the methods below, they will be sold/reserved to them.

When you get lots of quail eggs from new laying hens you make pickled quail eggs🤤

In case you were wondering, we don't hatch from new laying hens for many reasons.
1. We aim for our breeders to reach maturity as soon as 5-6 weeks. We keep roos separate from hens, as we will select only the best ones at 8 weeks of age.
2. Egg size. We select the hens that lay the best size and shape, ensuring they have the proper hip size and are not prolapsing.
We also don't hatch from breeding groups until a hen has been laying for at least a month, and a minimum of 10 weeks of age. 10 weeks is when they reach full maturity.

How many bird culls have you done so far this year? Whether that’s individual birds or entire groups of culls. Where are you at this season?

We’ve already done 3 groups of culls this year, and we do both soft and hard culling. What’s your approach?

One thing I always encourage people to look for when choosing breeders is whether or not they actually have a cull program. Selective breeding means making hard decisions for the long-term improvement of your flock.

For those unfamiliar:

• Soft culling = removing a bird from the breeding program while keeping it alive.
• Hard culling = removing the bird completely, whether through harvesting or humane euthanasia.

As a breeder, my goal is for every generation to improve from the last. One of the biggest tools in accomplishing that is careful selection and culling.

Culling can look different depending on the bird and situation. Sometimes it looks like placing a bird as pet quality into a pet-only home. Sometimes it looks like cull buyers coming to purchase males to help feed their families. Sometimes it means humanely ending suffering when a bird is born with severe defects or suffers from an injury. Sometimes it looks like the soup pot for bad behavior. Sometimes it looks like selling, because they do not have the traits you are currently working on and would be great starts for someone else.

Selective breeding isn’t about producing the most birds. It’s about producing better birds.
