American guinea hogs available in Tallahassee for pickup or delivery to local processors. 50-60 pounds right now and perfect BBQ size for end of summer or fall football.

For those unfamiliar with the breed these are smaller heritage hogs (150-300 pounds) that are great foragers with a friendly temperament. They are known for dark highly marbled and flavorful meat. They are technically lard pigs but I keep them on the leaner side. They are raised on hog feed as well as plenty of pecans, acorns, hickory nuts, farm eggs, and garden scraps.

Armed with nothing more than some good Dexter knives, a bone saw and some YouTube videos we broke down our first farm pig. She was a small girl at 119 lbs live weight but came out to over 70 pounds dressed weight. We had her started and split but we did everything else.

The guinea hogs are an old breed pig that grow well on pasture and forest. They don't grow fast like conventional breeds but they yield meat that I would put up against iberico if you raise them right.

Every bit of this girl will go to use. Scraps will be sausage, bones will be stock, fat will be lard for soap, and the offal is for the dogs.

These pigs will be available soon for delivery to a local processor. Smaller roasting sized pigs ready now.

Two different spiders within 3 feet of each other on the outside of the quail coop, two very different body sizes. Clearly the chunky one is in the better spot for flies.

It's just very striking to see the difference in the body patterns too because of the bloat.

A night of stinging caterpillars!

The lovely saddleback is so easy to spot with the neon green highlights. The sting is intensely painful and you typically have to remove the stinging spines from your skin if you brush up against them. It will look like a bee or jellyfish sting for most people. I see these guys every year and luckily haven't accidentally not seen them in a while.

The hag moth caterpillar was a new one for me. It looks like a weird fuzzy brown slug, which I would imagine where their nickname monkey slug comes from. I almost didn't even recognize it as a caterpillar at first. While apparently the sting is less horrible than the saddleback, still not a caterpillar you want to pet.

It was pretty cool to see both of these on the same night. Now that I know it's their time of year, I have to be a little more careful digging around in the bushes where I can't see. I prefer to admire these from a respectable distance.

Foraged and farmed dinner of braised quail in a chantrelle gravy over mashed potatoes. This was an absolutely delicious "fancy" hunters meal.

I obviously didn't hunt my quail, they were dispatched with kitchen shears because I don't like having to worry about biting in bird shot. I can still imagine a good day hunting then grabbing a basket full of mushrooms on the way back to the truck for dinner.

If you're still getting chanterelles around, I highly recommend this meal...chicken quarters would be lovely if you can't source quail.

I needed an uplifting easy hive inspection. The best part was that despite the heat, the girls were chill. Some are getting picked off by spiders but that's nature.

Pests are finally under control. Varroa have been low this summer but since the move from the previous pasture the hive beetles have been an issue. I think those are finally under control too. Also, the fall Spanish needles (Bidens alba) are starting to bloom in the woods and the ladies love those.

If you give a pig a pumpkin, they'll make more pumpkins.

I grow the Seminole pumpkins for the humans to eat but they're so prolific that I always have plenty to share with the animals. The pigs got a couple thrown in to the pen a few months ago. Apparently pumpkin seeds are like tomato seeds in that they can pass through a digestive tract and be totally viable. The compost pile they're growing out of seems to be super charging their growth also. As long as the deer in the woods don't strip the plants, in a few months the pigs will have pumpkins they grew as a snack.

Velma has two nice fresh water bowls but every dirty puddle or container holding hot rain water is better. She's my spoiled girl and best garden buddy.
