We stopped by Bethel Presbyterian Church near Tamassee today, and we had to find out more about this beautiful old church.
Bethel Presbyterian was established in 1805, and it has a fascinating connection to General Andrew Pickens, a Revolutionary War officer and early South Carolina leader. The church became part of the small community that developed around the Tamassee area.
The present church building dates back to 1846, making it nearly 180 years old! The historic cemetery surrounding the church also contains some very old graves, including markers dating back to the early 1800s.
One thing I found especially interesting is that Andrew Pickens was one of the early elders of Bethel, and the church's 1905 centennial monument recognizes his connection to the congregation.
It's amazing how many stories are tucked away along the roads we drive every day.
Have you ever stopped at Bethel Presbyterian Church? If you know any stories about the church or the people buried there, we would love to hear them!

Ever wonder what lies beneath the surface? Seeing Old Hwy 59 emerge from Lake Hartwell is like stepping back to 1963. Who remembers driving this route before the lake took over?

ONE DAY WE WILL HAVE LAKE HARTWELL BACK.

My view has changed a lot this year. This is what 9 ft low looks like in most coves.
