Happy first centennial to the Tampa Theatre in Tampa, Florida, originally opened 100 years ago on this day in 1926!

The Tampa Theatre was designed by noted theatre architect John Eberson, in his signature Atmospheric style with a Mediterranean courtyard theme. The design featured old-world statuary, flowers and shrubbery, stuffed birds, and gargoyles; all set under an artificial nighttime sky featuring twinkling stars.

100 years after its opening it is arguably the best-preserved Atmospheric theatre in the United States. Unlike many other theatres, lamp standards and smaller character-defining features throughout the auditorium were not taken off the walls and sold in the mid twentieth century, and so the Tampa Theatre is currently the closest one can get to the original design intent of John Eberson’s Atmospheric theatres.

Atmospheric theatres were a popular phase of theatre design in the latter half of the 1920s. Auditoria were designed to feel like outdoor spaces, affording patrons the sense of watching a movie alfresco underneath a blue sky with fleecy clouds and twinkling stars, and irregular buildings and distant landscape vistas on the side walls.

Happy 100th birthday to the Tampa Theatre, and here’s to the next 100 years – there is a party in Tampa tonight, for sure!

The Great Sanford Duck Hunt is back for Thanksgiving week

The Great Sanford Duck Hunt: Thanksgiving Edition

When: Saturday, November 21 through Friday, November 27
Where: Throughout downtown Sanford, including sponsor businesses and public spots

For one full week, 50 Thanksgiving-themed rubber ducks will be hidden around the heart of downtown, waiting to be found. Every duck has its own number and prize-redemption instructions on the bottom.

How it works
1. Explore downtown Sanford and hunt for the ducks.
2. Found one? Bring it to the Sanford Museum on Family Craft Day (November 28) to redeem your prize!

Good to know
• Open to kids ages 12 and under
• Limit one duck per child
