I have had trouble finding straw all spring. I pulled up a bunch of encroaching goosefoot and chopped it up with kitchen scissors and I'm using it as mulch. It will help keep the weeds down and prevent water evaporation and pretty fast it will break down and feed the soil.

One of the permaculture techniques I'm trying this year is compost pathways between hugels. I've layered paths lasagna-style with cardboard, sawdust, and leaves onto which I'm going to layer grass clippings, comfry leaves, etc--layering greens and browns to compost down beneath my feet, right where I want to use it.
