As we enter our 68th year, we do so with great trepidation. You are likely aware that we had some bitter cold winter temperatures. Those bitter temperatures damaged peaches, cherries, pears, grapes and some apple buds. In addition, we had some very warm periods in March and April that were followed by below-freezing temperatures. Trees were stimulated to produce blossoms early and the hard freezes then killed the blossoms. Below is a status report of our production for this year.
Cherries: We lost our entire sweet and tart cherry crop, so we will have NO cherries this year and we will NOT open at our normal time in early June.
Blueberries: We believe that we will have a crop, but it's a little early to tell if the last freeze on April 21 reduced the crop. Blueberries begin ripening in late June or early July, so that is the time we will open this year. We will post the opening date on Google and on our page.
Apples and Pears: We have no pears this year, all were lost in the freezes. Apples are severely reduced. Right now the fruitlets, fruit the size of a pencil eraser, exist on about 25% of the trees. We will know in a few weeks if those fruitlets survive or are damaged and will drop off the trees. If we have any apples, we will NOT have pick-your-own available this year.
Grapes: Grapes, like blueberries, endured the two hard freezes and then the two hard frosts in the last week and are damaged. We do not know the extent yet, but are hopeful that we will have some crop.
We will update our crop information on Google and on our page. You can also email us at [email protected] or text us at 480-220-8228 or call us at 724-224-9491, where you can listen to a current message each week.
We wish we had better news to share. We will keep you updated as the year progresses.
