What’s your common name of choice for Chionanthus virginicus? White fringetree seems to be becoming more common recently but I can’t shake the association with Lorapetalum chinensis I tend to gravitate towards grancy greybeard but whatever you call them, they’re magical for a brief window in Spring. If you come out to Blue Oak this weekend keep an eye out for the grancy greybeard and pinxterbloom azaleas in the woods along the drive.

We also have a beautiful crop of Chionanthus virginicus available now

Did you know all of our perennials start their journey in these 10”x10” community trays? After cold stratification or scarification, seeds are group sown into these small flats. They’ll spend their first 4-8 weeks here on heating mats with their soil temperature set for optimum germination. Once they are mature enough, they are transplanted into 3.5” pots or a deep cell plug tray to grow out for the first season.

Since our greenhouse is small we will do four rounds of these trays before we are done with our spring seed production schedule.
