WORMS! Kilgore Hollow has been working towards reducing our output of garbage to landfills by 75% this year. After much research we decided to start vermicomposting. We purchased 2lbs of European Red Wigglers
Dual purpose:
1) 50% of their diet comes from dry brown materials, like cardboard and paper!
2) they produce a soil (basically worm p**p) fill of Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium.
Fun Facts! They eat half their weight in food every day. You start with 2 pounds of worms, they will eat 1lb of kitchen scraps a day. They also double in number every 2 months, and will produce about 25lbs of "black gold" in that amount of time. That's about 60 pounds of food and paper scraps simply turned into fertilizer for plants! We plan to extend the composting outside into a larger composting area by the garden.
Start with 2 plastic bins. Drill some holes in the bottom of one for liquid drainage. (Don't worry the worms don't want to crawl out) drill larger holes around the top for air. Place into the second bin ontop on something to elevate it off the botrom. Tear up your brown material (cardboard, paper, hay, dry lease, egg cartons) and fill about halfway. Spray down with some water. Add worms. When feeding, Mark the lid in 8 sections and each day you feed, place the food in a zone and mark the date. By the 9th day, the food should be gone from the first zone! No meat, no dairy, no smell. Feed greens, egg shells, coffee ground/filters, tea, and tea bags, grain, ground bones, etc.
