This week is National Grasslands Week, June 21st - 27th 🎑🌱🌾.

We're going to spotlight some fantastic native grasses, that we also carry in our nursery 🪴🤗.

Little Bluestem ~ Schizachyrium scoparium

Little Bluestem is one of the Big 4 prairie grasses. It's an extremely low-maintenance, and still under-utilized native ornamental bunch grass. It can work well as a stand-alone specimen, but especially shines when planted en masse in just about any type of landscape setting 🏡.

Little Bluestem's fine textured foliage forms slender bluish-green dense mounds during the spring and summer. Its most striking appearance comes with its radiant reddish gold color change in the fall. Its interesting seed heads persists during the winter and have a shimmering effect in the sun 🌞.

Little Bluestem typically grows up to 4' high by 2' wide, is cold hardy to Zone 3, requires low water once established, and thrives in full sun, but can handle partial shade 😎.

Fun Facts: Little Bluestem is one of our historic prairie grasses of the plains of Texas and much of the United States. It's ancient roots can reach up to 8' deep underground 🤔😯.
