Four Winds Ranch At Four Winds we pride ourselves in selling farm raised beef. All cattle sold for beef are born & raised on our ranch. Local. Natural. Sustainable.

We specialize in selling whole, half and quarter steers to customers, and occasionally will offer meat for sale in individual packages. Four Winds Ranch specializes in pasture raised beef, raised in the Red River Valley. We have a small herd of Angus cross cattle that are fed to produce a premium carcass. Let’s talk about flies…..

In light of all the Old World Screwworm scares, it has made us step back and evaluate our fly program. We typically worm with a pour on in the spring -which also helps with fly control as also place fly tags on the yearlings and cows to help provide continuous control. With these methods combined we usually get about 4 months of decent fly control. But there’s always room for improvement. We’ve seen a huge decrease in fly activity in our ranch since we’ve implemented rotational grazing. This year we’ve also added using a spray on fly control when needed.
But why does fly control matter? Other than being annoying pests- flies spread disease, increase incidence of pink eye and also with interfere with healthy weight gain, causing the animal to spend more time swatting flies and in turn, burning calories.
The scary OWS hasn’t changed much on our ranch, but has caused us to be more vigilant about management practices and keep a close eye on our herd for issues.

Let’s talk minerals…..
You can have a great beef program, the best genetics, superior feed program and weedless pastures. But if you don’t consistently provide free choice minerals, your cattle will tell the tale. Mineral deficiency affects health, growth and even fertility. We began using these rubber top mineral feeders a few years ago and they’ve been wonderful. Talk to a nutritionist or cattle raiser, or feed store owner you trust and find out what your cattle may be missing out on….and how the right mineral mixture may transform your herd. Be sure to check regularly as we’ve noted our cattle go through phases where they need more or less mineral depending on the season.

Tell us about your mineral program in the comments below!
