August is all about preparing for winter! Our girls are busy gathering nectar and pollen from late-summer blooms like goldenrod and asters while stocking the hive with food.

🍯 They’re building their honey reserves
🌼 Gathering those last summer blooms
🐝 Raising the long-lived “winter bees”
🌡️ And keeping the hive cool on these hot Tennessee days!

While we’re enjoying the last days of summer, the bees are already getting ready for fall! 🍂🐝

🐝 WHAT ARE THE BEES UP TO IN AUGUST? 🍯

It may look like things are slowing down around the hive, but our bees are actually very busy getting ready for the months ahead!🐝

🌻 **The nectar flow is slowing down.**
By August, many of the big summer blooms are fading, so the bees have less nectar coming into the hive. They may actually eat more honey than they’re storing during this late-summer “nectar dearth.”

👑 **The queen begins to slow down.**
Her egg-laying can decrease as the colony starts shifting its focus from building a huge summer population to preparing for winter.

❄️ **They’re raising the bees that will carry the colony through winter!**
Late-summer bees are especially important because these longer-lived “winter bees” will help keep the colony alive through the colder months.

💧 **And yes… bees need water too!**
During these hot August days, bees collect water and use it to help cool the hive. You may even see them hanging around the entrance on especially hot days.

🛡️ **The bees are also getting protective.**
When nectar is scarce, colonies can become more defensive because they have precious honey stores to protect—and other bees, wasps, and yellowjackets may try to rob them.

So while August may seem quiet, there’s a whole lot of preparation happening inside the hive!🐝❤️

We love getting to watch these little workers do what God created them to do. 🍯🐝

We have 14 pints of some of the most beautiful honey we’ve ever seen!

This was extracted from a friends apiary in Loudon and will be available in both Museum Marketplace at Charles Hall Museum and The Primitive Mercantile until they sell out 🍯.
