We sold our steer calves last week, and we are extremely grateful to Big Horn Basin Livestock Auction, Danny Vigil, and every buyer who bid on our cattle. Our steers sold AWESOME, and we couldnโt be happier or more thankful.
But a conversation with a friend recently got me thinking.
He has a great smaller operation and told me, โMan, you guys make the market report every year. I just hope someday I can make the market report with my calves. You guys must be killing it.โ
And first off โ making the market report is absolutely something to be proud of. Producing cattle that buyers want and are willing to compete for is a great accomplishment.
But something I think is worth sharing: Making the market report does not mean youโre profitable.
Two of the years our cattle topped the market, made the market report, and even got mentioned on the Feeder Flash podcast were two of the LEAST profitable years our ranch had ever had.
The sale price looked great.
The numbers behind it didnโt.
This year, we have absolutely no complaints. Our calves sold extremely well and weโre having a good year. But hay is expensive, inputs are expensive, and those costs matter. A high sale price doesnโt automatically equal a huge profit margin.
Funny enough, my goats are the perfect example of the opposite. They didnโt make the market report this year. Nobody was talking about what they brought.
But when I sat down and actually ran the numbers, they had the most profitable year Iโve ever had with goats.
And THAT is what matters.
The market report tells you what something sold for. It doesnโt tell you what it cost to produce it. It doesnโt tell you what someone paid for hay, pasture, feed, labor, interest, equipment, replacements, death loss, vet bills, or a hundred other expenses.
So if youโre building your own operation, donโt get discouraged because somebody elseโs calves made the market report and yours didnโt. And donโt assume the guy at the top of the market is making a fortune, either. ๐
Know your own numbers.
If youโre producing something buyers like, getting a competitive price for it, controlling your costs, and putting money in your pocket at the end of the year, youโre doing something right.
The market report is fun.
Profitability is what keeps you going!
