Poor bars, they get such a bad rap! Bar trimming is highly controversial; methods range from never touching them at all, all the way to completely cutting them out. As usual, we'll always tell you that every horse is an individual, and what works on one horse might not work on another. Bars in an unhealthy or pathological foot will need to be managed differently from bars in a healthy foot. And bars on a healthy foot will vary in different environments and living situations. No case is exactly alike!
This hind foot (not trimmed in this picture) belongs to a TWH mare that has had traction issues with her hind end in the past - slipping and sliding around on our rock hard, slick-grassed ground. Her owner reports she now has improved traction - do you see what these big bars do for her? They function as a skid brake! This mare just completed a weekend of competitive trail, at a place with "boots recommended" rocky ground. She was totally bare and fine on the rocks - this is a beautiful, healthy foot. Interestingly, her fronts never have big bars like this... as usual, the foot is telling us what it needs, in this case some extra traction for her hinds.
