Wyatt’s Chicks -Eggs and Homesteading

Wyatt would like to reveal that we harvested roughly 6 gallons of honey which is approximately 72 lbs. Weight is how honey is sold. We got a little bit bottled tonight but we ran out of bottles with more coming on Friday.

He’s not a perfect herding dog but he sure does help out a lot on our little homestead…no goats or chickens have ever been harmed by him. Whenever our animals get close to the edge of our property he brings them back. Such a good boy!

It’s honey harvesting time! Yesterday we pulled honey from the hives. We left all the hives with 2 full deeps and 1 super and we took the rest. Through that process we called in the help of an experienced beekeeper as we realized 1 hive was in trouble with zero brood and that hive didn’t have nearly as much honey either so we didn’t take from that one. And we did not take from the new swarm, but it has filled out its first deep box nicely, so we added a 2nd deep. But we found that queen that stopped laying and got her replaced today with a newly mated queen... Can you guess how much 4 hives started this year on drawn out comb was able to produce after leaving them with winter reserves?

Yes, that’s Wyatt and his dad pictured. We all took turns spinning or holding the machine down, next on the wish list is an electric spinner 😅.

We had a goal this year to catch a swarm. Tonight even though it’s late in the season we did it!!

I don’t think I’m the only one struggling in this heat…we didn’t realize how large this hive had grown until we saw them bearding today 🥵

Here’s a few things that we’ve been up to. Wyatt has helped plant 12 fruit trees, he’s been helping me pick out and plant flowers, we now have an herb garden and a vegetable garden to go with our bees and goats and we aren’t even sure how many chickens we have anymore. As the summer progresses The Coop will be stocked with a variety of items made here from our little homestead. We intend to provide a variety of items and hopefully be a little unique and diversified from other neighboring farm stands.

Our little homestead has grown again. Wyatt got suited up and helped in feeding the bees. Hopefully we’ll get a little honey this fall. 🐝🍯

It’s been 5 days since Wyatt’s chicks hatched. We ended up with 18 chicks from this hatch. Aren’t they adorable? They came in a variety of colors, it’s always fun to see what colors they grow into. We do enjoy hatching chicks!
