As former enlisted myself, I try to teach my kids the importance of knowing and remembering what today is about, and why it matters. Countless brave men and women from all walks of life gave their lives for this country - for our freedoms, for our lifestyles, for our ability to have the American Dream mean something different to everyone. Today is not a day to thank military personnel for serving — today is not a day to wish someone “happy Memorial Day!” — today is not a day to thank a veteran for their service — and today is not a day for booze, fireworks, and partying ….today is a day to thank those who have died in their service to their country; those who hugged their families, promised them they’d return safe, and then never touched US soil alive again. The simplest way to honor these people is this: just don’t be an as***le. Stand for the National Anthem, know the pledge of allegiance, and live like an American. Care about your community, be kind, obey the laws of the land, be considerate, don’t steal and commit crime “because you think the world owes you” - just be a decent human and make damn sure the lives of our fallen service members count toward protecting the greater good of our people, with respect, loyalty, grace, and gratitude for what we do have in this world.
