🌳 Land Managment & Conservation

We opened our first ever farm store with a desire to continue our history of supporting our local community. Since opening, we’ve expanded from offering our own Kinloch Farm products to a curated market of goods from Virginian producers. Our store is located at the entry to rural Virginia, nestled within the fields our cattle graze, and just outside the historic town of The Plains. We carry a comp

lete inventory of cuts of our grassfed, grass-finished beef and other select products from our farm. We hope that you will stop by our store and continue on to visit the shops, restaurants, and attractions of our town and community. We also encourage you to come further support Virginia farmers on Sundays from 10am to 2pm when we share our location with the long-standing Archwood Green Barns Farmers’ Market.

09/14/2023

As we navigate one of the most significant droughts our area has experienced in over 40 years, we are in a consistent state of observation and adaptation. We adapt our rotations based on a lack of water. We’re cognizant of where our animal density and impact is ideal and where the environment is a little too brittle at the moment. Oftentimes in periods of drought or weather uncertainty, it can be common to take all the grass that you see while you have it, but that decision has a series of cascading and compounding effects that will be felt for years to come. That stresses the plant, root system, and causes more bare soil. While the environment is brittle, we have to remain steadfast in our efforts to manage our land adaptively. We continue to rotate, we continue to alter stock densities based on the paddocks that we’re in, and we continue to stay the course.

One unforeseen outcome of this hot and dry period is how quickly it set our calving season into overdrive. We started calving earlier than normal and the pace never slowed down. Over the last 3 weeks, we’ve had 101 calves born. It’s been an incredibly efficient calving season so far. This is important so we don’t have calves being born staggered through multiple different seasons and stretched out over 3-4 months. They’re all being born within the same window, which is ideal. This season we’re just 3 weeks ahead of schedule. We’re theorizing it’s heat, drought, and/or stress related, but we can’t be certain. The stress is manageable, but something for us to be aware of now—the plants are stressed, the animals could be warm and stressed (although during the last heat stretch, we parked them in a field with multiple water sources and one of their favorite shade spots!

One of the changes we’re implementing this fall to adjust our management to adapting climate conditions is that we’re planning to alter our calving season next year, so we won’t start calving until mid September. Subsequently, our fall breeding season this year will have an accommodating time frame. If it stays hotter longer, we want to try and calve outside of those high heat windows. It’s just a safer and more comfortable time for the calves to be born.

08/20/2023

We recently had Daniel and Morgan from the Robinia Institute, an accredited Savory Institute Hub located in Nelson County, out to Kinloch Farm to perform our Year one audit for the Ecological Outcome Verification program.

We’re ecstatic to be involved in this program with Robinia as it situates Kinloch Farm amongst a group of producers with shared ecological values. The EOV program measures the ecological outcomes of our management and certifies whether or not our ecological health index improves or declines as a result of our management. If it declines, why? Likewise, if it improves. Why?

This program assesses biological soil health, forage species diversity (Including favorable species and ‘undesirable’ populations, water retention, ground cover, plant vigor, among other indicators). If we see a rise in important indicators, then Kinloch Farm would be certified as a farm that is regenerating the landscape.

Coupling this with work from partners such as Clifton Institute and Virginia Working Landscapes that assist in monitoring our grassland bird populations and kestrel populations, we are able to get a clearer picture as to the overall health of our landscape as a result of our management strategies.

The art of leathercrafting is a skilled trade that has been around for centuries and is fully embraced in our region via the equine community.

On this we take time to appreciate Pergamena of Montgomery, New York, and Larkins, in Marshall. Both of these makers, are not only experts in their craft but also are helping us to build a more sustainable food system, by taking an item that is seen sometimes as a byproduct of beef production and turning it into something beautiful.

Notes from the Farm | Looking at the seasons within a calendar year, August presents us with a shoulder season. We’re through with all haymaking, cattle rotations are pretty well dialed in, and we haven’t started calving yet. Now, we have a few weeks to get organized and ready for calving season, get caught up on any fence repairs that we may have temporarily mended during the busy Spring period, and work on some equipment maintenance. We’ll be expecting our first calf by the end of August and then we’ll be calving all the way through the first part of November. We’re expecting 170 calves this year.

We welcomed Dr. Pat Keyser from the University of Tennessee Center for Native Grasslands Management to Kinloch on August 4th. We spent the morning with 60 researchers, producers, scientists, local non profits, and industry professionals discussing the importance of Native Warm Season Grasses in a working landscape.

Dr. Keyser shared some great educational material and practical examples of the importance of incorporating Native Warm Season Grasses into a production setting. We then took to the field and spent time in 30 acres of Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, and Indian Grass while our 33 steers looked on from the comfort of the shade that the Locust Tree casts.

08/04/2023

In our riparian areas, we deliberately plant a variety of trees. They provide structure to our soil, shade and habitat for wildlife, limit stream bank erosion, and provide invasive species control. A tall canopy over our wetlands and waterways limits the spread of invasive species that can lead to a monoculture of Japanese Stiltgrass and Arthraxon, both of which love direct sunlight.

We plant between 600-1,500 trees per year, focusing on our riparian areas. We mainly plant live stake willow cuttings, sycamore, persimmon, and hackberry which are species that thrive in wet conditions. We also tag and cage volunteer hardwoods using the theory of “if it wants to be, it shall be.”

Some of our bulls, ages 2 - 10, are currently for sale!

Over the last 18 years, we've developed our Kinloch Farm genetic line utilizing Wye, Octoraro, Ballot of Belladrum, and Pinebank Waigroup 41/97. These pedigrees run deep in our current genetic lines. Our bulls are adapted to a low input system and thrive on fescue. They are heavily muscled and moderately framed bulls that will provide generational influence on your herd.

Please visit us at kinlochfarm.com/genetics to view photos and read pedigrees of our bulls for sale. You may also send us a direct message or contact us via email at [email protected].

We utilize several methods of management within our meadows including prescribed fire, targeted mowing, and specific herbicide applications for non-native species. Fire provides a great reset and keeps our meadows in the young successional phase and prevents the encroachment of non-native woody species in our meadows. Each of these methods we think of as tools within our tool box of management strategies and we utilize them all, situationally, to achieve our goals.

You can learn more about our native meadows and conservation practices at kinlochfarm.com.
