Not a great picture but it seems that we will have a bottle calf available this year. Due to momma not having much milk. No name yet as he was just born this morning. More pictures to come tonight. $2500 obo. Will keep with mom but supplement 2 bottles per day until rehomed. He will be a mini highland. Out of our mini cow Granny and highland bull Bear (HHCA). Possible crossbred registration available through HHCA.

Granny was in a rough situation before coming to us where she calved and calves were pulled and immediately sold as bottle babies. She was not given another calf to love and raise; this caused heavy mastitis and two of her 4 quarters to harden completely and her other 2 quarters to harden partially. In 2022, she was able to mostly raise her calf by herself but the calf stole off the milk cows as well. This year, she doesn’t even have enough milk for one feeding.

Granny was only in the chute this morning for safety of the calf. I didn’t want her worrying about me when the calf was laying under her sucking. She’s a babydoll the rest of the time.

This silly boy figured out he can suck easier laying down!

Sadly, we have decided to sell a few of our gals due to the drought and loosing most of our grass. Beef cows, milk cows, highlanders and goats alike will be moving down the road in the next few months.

It was a sad day today at the house. Two of our favorite girls, Daisy and Poppy, went to new homes today. They are on the road and traveling to Alabama today and tomorrow.

They are going to great homes and will be treated just as amazing as they have been with us.

Enjoy these girls Cathy Trucks & Lonna Hembree!

When Poppy came to us, she was in rough condition. Never wormed, given mineral, or vaccines. She was so timid that if any cow walked towards her, she ran to any corner to get away.

She has now been with us for 1.5 years and although her overall condition has only gone up maybe one BCS overall, her health and demeanor has improved dramatically. Her feed program hasn’t changed. All that has changed is good mineral and worming for internal parasites.

This year, she weaned a calf that weighed 575 lbs and is bred again. When she went across the scale at the vet clinic, she only weighed 985. Our goal for any cow is for them to wean a calf that weighs 50% of their body weight or more. This means that Poppy weaned us 58% of her weight in a calf.

In the past, our highlanders have not been good about respecting electric fences. The cornstalks surrounding our house came available this winter and we couldn’t say no. So it was time to find a way to make it work.

After plenty of research, we determined that a fencer that will keep our beef cattle in, probably isn’t hot enough for the highlanders due to their thicker hair.

Surprisingly, a new fencer was all it took. Now, I know fencers are expensive, but when you look at the price of grass hay in our area ($250/T), investing in a better fencer is an extreamly cost effective solution to feeding hay all winter.

We figured with grass hay & protein (alfalfa), it would cost $3-4/day/head to feed the cows all winter. Plus their health would deteriorate to some extent due to the close quarters with other cows from having to be dry lotted.

Cornstalks are only costing us $0.12/day/head. We did have to invest in a fencer, more fence posts and more wire, but even if we figure that into our cost, it’s still under $1/head/day. And those are items that will outlive my lifetime and are just an investment. Plus our cows can travel out of the yard and be cows.

And finally, because our cornstalks are around our house, the cows can still come into the yard every night and eat grass hay if they choose and lay on cornstalks behind the windbreak we built for them last year.

Less maintenance, less cost, and happy, healthy cattle
