On this day in 2023, the equestrian world lost one of its brightest stars. Ellie Wood Page Keith Baxter passed away at her home om Virginia on June 12.
A true legend in the show ring, Ellie Wood achieved what countless young riders only dreamed of when she won the ASPCA Maclay Trophy at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden in 1935. Her remarkable career included victories at some of the nation’s most prestigious horse shows, including Upperville, Warrenton, Devon, Harrisburg, The National Horse Show, and The International.
From the 1930s through the 1960s, she was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and sought-after female riders in the country. Among the many outstanding horses she rode and showed were Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe’s celebrated hunter/jumpers, including Silent Mantle, Pass Run, and Journey Proud. She is pictured here on Mrs. Poe's Baby Seal.
Today, we remember Ellie Wood not only for her extraordinary accomplishments in the equestrian world, but also for the lasting legacy she left at Pebble Hill and beyond. pebblehill.com The Chronicle Of The Horse United States Hunter Jumper Association - USHJA Virginia Horse Center Horse Illustrated Washington International Horse Show Devon Horse Show Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show
