Ah, the best-laid plans of farmers and cattle often go awry. While we leased a beautiful, well-bred bull to improve our herd, it turns out one of our homegrown rebels—who managed to dodge every vet visit like a bovine Houdini—had his own ambitious breeding program in mind.
The moment he started getting ideas above his station, he was promptly invited to an all-expenses-paid trip to freezer camp. But, as it turns out, he left quite the legacy behind. Apparently, he was the most fertile bull on the planet, because two calves arrived during a snowstorm, just hours apart, from two different baby mamas.
We did our best to keep them with their mothers, but Mother Nature had other plans. Between the cold, the wind, and a rather unfortunate stepping incident, we made the executive decision to bring them into the barn.
So here we are—our carefully orchestrated breeding strategy hijacked by an overachieving steer who defied science and schedules. Farming keeps you humble, but at least now we have two surprise little ones to brighten up the barn.
