The NY Times is very late to the game on this topic. Progressive and organic farmers have been doing this for generations. Soil researcher Wes Jackson and farm advocate Wendell Berry have been lobbying the government agencies for decades to get them to implement such practices. But, still, it is impressive to see the topic covered in a major newspaper, and perhaps it will move the practice even more to the forefront!

The practice of seeding fields between harvests with noncash crops, which had fallen out of favor at modern farms, is making a steady comeback as farmers who have embraced it report higher yields.
