This month’s club is a journey to three volcanic islands: Limnos, Tenerife, and Sicily.
On Limnos the fire went out eighteen million years ago. On Tenerife it last showed itself in 1909. Etna is erupting as I write this. What the three share is what those fires left behind — because volcanic soil shapes a wine more than almost any soil on earth. Ash and pumice hold almost no water, so roots dig deep and work for everything they get. The rock gives up potassium, iron, and magnesium, but almost no nitrogen — just enough for the vine to ripen fruit, not much to spend on leaves. Small berries. Nothing wasted.
This month’s wines:
🌋 Tenerife — a white grown on the eastern slopes below Teide, from a family working the same ground since just after WWII
🌋 Etna — Sicily’s answer to Nebbiolo: Nerello Mascalese, grown almost nowhere but this mountain
🌋 Limnos — a wine made the way Greeks made it when ships sailed from here for Troy, and made almost nowhere else now
Different grapes, different centuries, no shared tradition — just what the volcanoes left behind at the foot of the vines. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In the glass: a living memory of fragrance and soft fire.
