THROCKMORTON CUPOLA CELEBRATION:
THE COURTHOUSE CROWNING
THROCKMORTON, TEX. -- The Throckmorton County Courthouse Restoration is well underway, and June 13 will mark a pivotal moment in the process when it is once again crowned with a 28-foot cupola that was removed in the 1920’s. To commemorate the occasion, the Throckmorton Beautification Committee and Throckmorton Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will hold a celebration on the evening of Thursday, June 12 on Poage Street near the courthouse square.
Photos with the 28-foot cupola will be available for purchase starting at 6:30. Hotdogs will be served at 7:00, and a ceremony, honoring the placement of the cupola, will follow at 8:15. Texas First Lady Anita Perry will be in attendance to mark the historic day for Throckmorton County. The Clear Fork Boys of Fort Griffin will serenade the group into the evening for an old-fashioned street dance at 9:00.
On the following morning, a crane will raise the cupola onto the 1891 courthouse, where it will once again reside overlooking the city of Throckmorton.
Throckmorton received funding from the Texas Historical Commission for a full courthouse restoration, an effort to preserve Texas's most historical buildings and architectural masterpieces. The Throckmorton courthouse was built in 1891 in the Italianate style. Its 1920’s modification removed the cupola and added additional office space to the back. This addition was removed for historical purposes and those offices relocated into the courthouse annex, a renovated, century-old building that originally housed the First National Bank.
In the past five years, Throckmorton has invested over $5 million in its downtown infrastructure for revitalization purposes.
