Friday, August 22, 2025 An explosion at Smitty's Supply in Roseland, Louisiana, resulted in a petroleum fire and a subsequent environmental disaster affecting farmland and waterways, including the Tangipahoa River. There are so many people that are affected by this from the employees at Smitty's to the surrounding populations.

There are many concerns about the environmental impact and how it affects water, air, and soil quality. Many people are searching for answers and solutions.

I'm presenting this information to showcase the impact and introduce a solution, mycoremediation. Mycoremediation is a form of bioremediation that employs the use of fungi for the purposes of degrading or sequestering contaminants in the environment.

Fungi in the Pleurotus genus have showed great efficacy in cleaning up petroleum and its derivatives. I am reaching out to people in the mycology and environmental science community for assistance in putting together a proposal for scaling a mycoremediation effort. Please pass along this information and share it to whomever would be interested or able to help.

I make small batch ferments for our family, but over the past year, several folks have asked to buy some. So, now I am growing more produce to ferment as well as sourcing things I don't grow from local farmers, like these jalapeños.

This is a special order for someone. I'm excited to see how this turns out. It already smells amazing, and I have ideas for what I will do differently next time with the addition of some spices/herbs.

Anyhow, I aimed for a 4% brine to account for the dried mushies, and it's been going about 2 weeks. Another 2 weeks, and it'll be ready to crack open and go to its new home.

What suggestions would you make for a functional Family Fungi fiery ferment? Let me know in the comments.

I happened to see this fungally-mummified sharpshooter last night on one of the mulberry trees next to our chicken run.

Did you know that the sharpshooters get their name from flicking p*e off of their butts? Yep. Our 2 young sons thought that was hilarious. They have a "butt flicker" that "shoots" the p*e away from their body because (due to surface tension) the p*e sticks to their bodies.

Sharpshooters (aka p*e-flinging butt flickers) drink interstitial fluid within plants, but they process around 300 times their body weight per day, so they're constantly "raining" their p*e down from the plants they feed upon.

Anyways, whenever you're enjoying your next sit beneath a tree or some greenery, and you feel like it's misting on you, then you're probably just down range from a sharpshooter.

Sølvi is going to be a big sister?! It's tear-jerking for us to think about her being a big sister soon. She and her brothers have such a close relationship, and she is already so nurturing. She wakes up in the morning and immediately wants to wake Jah, cuddle, and play.

Jah and Manu are such close friends, but they still have a 2 1/2 yr age gap, so Jah is able to do many things that Manu is not able to, yet...

This year has brought a lot of changes, both with our business and now an addition to our family, plus we will soon be moving a house onto the property, then we will have a space big enough for our growing family.

Last night, I found that our swarm that moved in earlier in the year had absconded. The hive is loaded with honey! I pulled one frame and managed to make a nice sticky mess and gather a quart of honey.

So, I still have to extract quite a few frames, and a friend is going to let me borrow his setup to sp*ed this up.

More abundance from designing/installing systems and leaving them alone.

Summer comes early here in South Louisiana. We're already getting high temps in the mid 90's. We're enjoying the foraging and harvesting season that is upon us.

Chanterelles made into crawfish and chanterelle mac and cheese w/chicken schnitzel.

Heaps of lions mane for supplements.

Also, the ladies and are having fun in the kitchen with them. These sourdough lion's mane "crab rangoons" were unbeatable.
