Field Talk with Farmer Phil 🎙️
Summer squash season is here! Today we’re taking you with us into the fields for a peak at our squash fields.
In the early mornings while the dew is still sparkling on the plants, you’ll find gorgeous orange blossoms opening up with the morning sun.
At first glance, all blossoms look the same, beautifully bright yellowish-orange with a star shape when fully open. There is a distinct difference though if you pay close attention.
Female Blossoms: These sit close to the main plant and have a small, undeveloped baby squash at the base that will grow into full squashes.
Male Blossoms: The male blossoms grow on long, slender stalks and feature a stamen (the pollen-bearing stalk) in the center.
The flowers open early in the morning and if pollen is successfully received by the female flowers early, it will close up, wither, drop off and the squash will start to grow.
If not pollinated at first opening both the female blossom and small squash at the base will fall off!
