What a difference a year makes! Last year was probably the earliest start on record for the entire country and Canada. This year is more normal. We got just enough sap last week for our first cook. Then a week of snow and cold. It was warm enough to fix more vacuum leaks in our woods yesterday. We are now approaching 28 inches of mercury, not far from maximum for our elevation. Very pleased with that. A bunch of warm weather in the forecast. We can only hope we can get another month of freezing nights and above freezing days. The season is still young!

We often get asked by our loyal fans how to get resupplied with more maple syrup, maple cream, maple sugar, and maple root beer. There is a great opportunity this Saturday in the Clarksville, Tennessee area. One of the Krueger brothers, Mark, lives there half of the year with his wife Vicki. The Montgomery County Master Gardeners Association is featuring Vicki's gardens on their 2023 Garden Tour. If you can't make it, just message us and we will resupply you. In fact, just about any member of our family can help you out whether in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, or Tennessee.

Still some snow in the sugar bush, especially on the north sides of the hills. Got down to 21F last night with a wintery mix and a few inches of snow expected this evening. We are nearing the end of this season with upper 70's predicted for next week. For the 2nd time in 8 years, we will probably be cooking on Easter. Our crop quality is excellent, but the volume won't top our record-breaking last season. Like farmers who gut it out to get the last of the hay in the barn before the rains come, we are working hard to complete our harvest. Soon we can rest and get started on the end of season cleanup. Thank you for cheering us on!

Got down in the single digits last night with a wind chill of about -10. We have about 8,000 gallons of sap if we could just get the valve open! We use heat tape and rarely have an issue. Steve Krueger is the valve expert...best side to the camera lol. Big shout out to our brother-in-law Steve Natzke for his help all these early mornings getting started.

Every season is different. Some are 5 weeks of continuous sap, exhaustion, and no sleep. This one started slow and then lots of snow and cold. We have about 20% of our crop so far. Around 20 inches of snow all winter before Mark arrived on Feb 16th and over 30 inches since with more coming.

First day cooking this season! Every year is different. We brought a few thousand gallons home a few weeks ago, but not enough to cook. Then multiple blizzards and cold (below zero a few days). Trees are starting to run a little each day, so it's time. We hope to follow our record-breaking season last year with an even better one. Steve put in over 4000 taps while Mark was still in Tennessee. We appreciate all who support our family operation.

The cold weather has delayed the start of the season. Can't help but be a little anxious to get a full crop. Last year we brought our 1st load of sap home on 24 Feb and 1st boiled on 27 Feb. Half of our crop (25 barrels, 55-gallons each) was in by mid-March. But in 2018, our 1st load was on 14 Mar and we finished on 8 Apr...was a very good season even with a late start. The trees will really run this week finally with our 1st boil probably on Wednesday. If all goes well, we will get little sleep and be totally exhausted for the next 4 weeks.

We are so excited that the 2022 maple syrup season is upon us! It really takes an army of family & friends to make this happen. Hard work includes tapping trees, making firewood, gathering sap, bottling syrup, & even building the sugar shack. Details may change how we do things as time marches on, but we still pride ourselves on making great maple syrup. You'll find generations 2-5 in these pictures. Yes, generation 5 is in training and is especially good at performing "quality control" (tasting) the fresh syrup.

Absolutely gorgeous day to stroll through the woods pulling our taps. In a year where the maple sap had lower sugar, we still made more than our full crop. A lot of other folks fell short. From preliminary reports, we are hearing that the sugar content was lower nationwide. Canada's season runs much later, so we don't know yet if this happened there as well. We pride ourselves in always being far better than average, but we still feel awesome about this season. We made 51 barrels, which is a few less than 57 last year. With a normal amount of sugar in the sap, we could have hit 70 barrels. Syrup is great tasting and a bit darker since we had to cook it a little longer. Steve and Mark wish to thank their families and friends for their endless support.

Just finished our maple syrup season. Used quite a bit of awesome firewood from Kopitzke Forest Products/Young Guns in our evaporator. We made 51 barrels (55 gallons each) of great maple syrup. Highly recommend them!

Picking up a load of sap (1050 gallons). This is our 4th load, so are cooking for the first time today. Along with sap from our partners, the Kopitzkes, we'll probably go through about 8000 gallons of sap.
