Why do some carrots grow forked and twisted? When the root hits a rock, a hard clump, or compacted soil, it can’t grow straight, so it splits and bends around the obstacle. Fresh manure and heavy clay can cause it too. For straight carrots, loosen the soil deeply, remove stones, and grow them in a raised bed or deep container with fine, loose soil. Forked carrots are still perfectly edible!

Planting too deep or too shallow can stop seeds from sprouting. A good rule of thumb is to plant a seed about 2 to 3 times as deep as it is wide. Tiny seeds like lettuce and carrot need just a light dusting of soil, while big seeds like beans and corn go about 1 to 2 inches down. When in doubt, check your seed packet!
