Grass fed and finishex beef and pastured pork shares available! Home to Coastland Cattle Company, breeders of Rubia Gallega cattle

A year ago today we were in Galicia, Spain touring farms where our Rubia Gallega breed comes from. You can see it looks similar to our neck of the woods and has a similar climate. The second video was at Zara Farms. The owner of Zara grew up here had always wanted his own herd of cattle and this herd is the result!

A not so brief commentary on why even cows eating just grass are more expensive these days. Also, the big girl returns. Thanks to .ag.turf and for getting it back in action.

You can’t have good beef without good soil. We take care of the soil first because just like the cows if you take care of it, it will take care of you. So as of today, we start changing the intensity and efficiency of grazing operations in favor of making our soil stronger. Additionally, we will lengthen roots and armor the soil and create a more drought tolerant situation. As stewards of the land and cattle we try to be Intentional in our management of these things.

The benefits of humic and fulvic acids are numerous. There are people that take this in supplement form as well. When fed to the cows, whose stomachs are basically a microbial digestion chamber, there are tremendous health benefits. Additionally, they act as a distribution system through their 💩 while grazing! Feel free to research for yourself, but this is an important piece of what we do to keep our animals naturally healthy.

Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye. It is extremely tough even in low water conditions, and cold weather. It gives us another leg to stand on should we have a dry summer. And also increases diversity within our soil by bringing a different class of plant to the pastures. It makes good feed for the cows, but timing is critical and here’s why!

The fact that nutrients don’t just flow to the root of a plant is often misunderstood. The microbiology of soil actually allows the plant to access the nutrients in the soil. So if you take biology, take care of the plant. Commercial fertilizer is produced by petroleum. Petroleum harms microbes. Utilizing manure from our cows we fertilize our ground without doing damage so that’s what we do!

Nutrient density varies widely on beef across the spectrum of management systems from feedlot systems to “grass fed”. However, according to research the gold-standard is cows, grazing, diverse pastures from birth until processing. That means not just grazing grass but forbs like plantain, chicory, brassicas like radish and turnips, legumes such as clover and vetch. Each of these things has a unique ability to grab hold of nutrients and minerals and bring them to the cow. Additionally, they each play a function in soil health, which in-turn makes the nutrients more available to the plant and creates better growing conditions which allow the plants to thrive. And of course, when the plants thrive, the cows thrive. So in this video, you might see some cows grazing a field, but we see an opportunity to do better and we are taking it!
