There’s a lot of information out right now about USDA packing plants and I think it’s causing some confusion with the direct to consumer market. For us here in Oregon, we can either take an animal to one of a handful of small USDA processors and sell individual cuts from that animal to restaurants, markets, or individual customers. With an Oregon Dept Of Ag facility we can do the same except we have to stay within the state lines on sales. Then there is custom exempt, which means that you the end user own the animal or a portion of the animal and you can have it processed wherever and however you want because you own that animal. However, these cuts are marked specifically, not for sale because when the animal was dispatched and prepped for the rail, there was no inspector present like there is on a USDA or ODA certified animal. Legally, you are not allowed to purchase this meat, even in quarters because you did not own the animal or a part of the animal before it was processed. Questions? Feel free to message me and I’ll do my best to clarify!

Why the chicory plants are still green in late summer! Tremendous tap root breaks up compaction AND can reach moisture still being stored deep in the soil. This tap root also is able to Harvest minerals and bring them up into the plant which then allows for superior nutrition for the cattle and in turn more nutrient dense beef.

A not so brief explanation

Relative feed value is a metric we use to determine the value of forages (non grains) in the animals diet. We get this by performing a forage sample test at an accredited lab. Farmers have been known to be mistakingly busted by police for having small plastic bags of dried green forage 😂

The feed is so powerful that we have to make sure the cows don’t overindulge on it!

If you want more information, you can look up “Oxford University study chicory animal feed”

Even the pigs like it!

Regenerative grazing is a balance of impact and recovery. It’s just like your muscles when you are training you can build more with a well thought out plan.

Grass showing full recovery has four leaves to go to a point and have just started turning brown at the tips.

Certainly no one is going hungry, but we want to make sure we care for the pastures so that they have the capacity to regrow and carry cows through the winter.

It’s much easier for one person to call cows than it is to herd cows

Silage is fermented forage. This makes for an amazing feed that stores indefinitely, even in our wet environment.

Happy mommas. By placing the feed along the fence line, the cows don’t trample it. Specifically chose this fence line because there are some blackberries and thistle coming up, and the cows will trample those down, providing effective control without spray.

The pigs get bigger and root more aggressively while the grass is slowing down at the same time. Late summer and early fall “pig tractor“ grazing turns into more of a tillage operation. They have been very effective at rooting out the red curly dock roots! Fall pig shares available! DM for details! Reviews of last year’s crop have been stellar!

Live life first. Share it second. Making sure we don’t let content get in the way of life. Also, some of you may not know that for six years while running the family dairy I also started a company that sold robotics like we use on our dairy farm to other farmers around the Pacific Northwest. The robotic milking system is voluntary and the cows can go and milk themselves whenever they want. We use this tagline pretty successfully until we sold the business in late 2021.
