Master Gardener Tip of the Week

If you are like me, you thoroughly enjoy most things garlic: 40-clove garlic chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, garlic knots, garlic on pizza . . . So, why not plant it in your garden? Now until November is the time to plant garlic in western Oregon.

It is best to use certified seed garlic that can be found at many nurseries and garden retail centers this time of year. Certified seed garlic is tested and guaranteed to be free of diseases and insects. Garlic from the grocery store does not provide the same protection.

It is important to prepare the soil before planting garlic and provide a section of the garden you will not need for a while. Garlic planted now will mature around July. Individual cloves should be planted 4 to 6 inches apart. Make sure to orient the cloves with the pointed end sticking up, and cover the cloves with 1 to 2 inches of soil. It is a good idea to mulch over the newly planted garlic with about 4 inches of leaves or straw.

The following articles will help you decide which garlic to grow, how to plant and care for the garlic as it grows, when and how to harvest, and how to manage common diseases or insects that may affect garlic growing in your garden:

I’ve recently seen a lot of posts discouraging potential new chicken owners from buying baby chicks and saying that you should just wait out the market prices for the eggs.
But all of us were beginners once, and if you think you should start raising backyard chickens and have the time and the means to do so, I want to encourage you to do it!
