We come to your home, listen to what you are noticing, and run some basic tests on site. Then we explain what the results mean in plain language and put together a clear proposal built around your water and your household.

You decide what happens next. Some folks move forward right away. Others take time to think it over. Either way, you will know more about your water than you did before we arrived.

Heavy rain can do more than fill the lake.

After a big storm or flooding, surface water can reach a well through a loose cap, a cracked casing, or poor drainage around the wellhead. That can carry bacteria into the water supply. Bacteria usually do not change the look or taste of water, so testing is the only way to know.

If a test comes back positive, the fix may be shock chlorination to disinfect the well, UV treatment for ongoing protection, or both, depending on the cause.

They usually point to acidic water, meaning water with a low pH. Acidic water slowly dissolves copper plumbing, which leaves those stains behind and can lead to pinhole leaks over time. It can also pick up metals from pipes and fixtures on the way to your glass.

When did you last change your water filters?

General guidelines, which vary with your water and your system:
• Sediment cartridges: every few months, sooner if pressure drops
• Carbon cartridges: often every 6 to 12 months
• UV lamps: usually once a year, even if the light still looks on
• RO membranes: roughly every 2 to 3 years

An easy way to keep track: write the date on the housing with a marker each time you swap a cartridge.

Quick weekend chore: lift the lid on your water softener's brine tank.

If the salt level is low, top it off. If it looks full but hasn't gone down in weeks, poke gently with a broom handle. A hard crust called a salt bridge can form above the water, so the softener goes through its cycle without making brine. Hard water slips through while everything looks normal.

It takes two minutes and helps your softener head into winter working the way it should.

Water with a faint yellow or tea color in the fall? Tannins may be the reason.

Tannins come from decaying leaves and other organic matter. As fall rain soaks through the ground, they can reach shallow wells and some drilled wells, tinting the water and adding an earthy taste. They are also easy to confuse with iron, and the two call for different treatment.

Cooler mornings call for better coffee.

Coffee and tea are almost entirely water, so whatever is in your tap shows up in the cup. Iron, hardness, and chlorine can all change the flavor.
