Thankful Farms

Thankful Farms Helping to feed those in need. We also raised vegetables and chickens for our own use.

Thankful Farms is a Christ-centered farm with its focus on raising naturally grown food for those in need through the production of pasture raised animals. In January 2017 we started in a temporary location on a former apple orchard in the mountains of North Carolina where we raised Berkshire hogs on pasture for retail sales. Everything that comes from Thankful Farms is naturally raised with usin

g Organic principles. A percentage of all sales goes directly towards providing food for those in need. Your continued support of Thankful Farms in turn allows us to continue our community outreach efforts.

The cows went on a walkabout! Our 8 Dexter cows have been in the summer pasture for several weeks but we have had so little rain we had to give them some hay so supplement the sparse grass. Yesterday afternoon I heard some "mooing" which we can't normally hear from the house when they are up at the summer pasture. I opened the pasturecam on my phone and panned around the whole pasture -- NO COWS and the gate was open! I went out the door and headed one way and Shand headed the other way. I found 5 calmly grazing in the old Pig Lot and the other three looking at me from in front of the Tractor Shed. Those three followed me into the pig lot and I quickly latched the gate. We could reconstruct their walkabout route by following the cow pies. They had walked from the gate between the muscadine vines and the workshop, down past the open gate to the winter pasture, past the house, down to check out the chicken run and around the vegetable garden into the pig lot. Total trek in unfenced area of nearly 1,000 feet. Once contained in the pig lot, they easily moved into the Winter Pasture. When I walked to the alley between the summer and winter pastures, they followed along, through the alley and back into the Summer Pasture. Gate is now double latched.
God was truly watching over all of us to resolve this so easily.

Bees built up an interesting piece of burr comb between the inner cover and the top frames. Had a shim installed to provide room for sugar brick. They ate the sugar and used the space.
