The compost piles are cooking! These are just from the manure we collected from the end of March -May. Most of the winter we bale graze the cows on our fields to spread seeds and fertilize directly.

We have some hold outs from spring calving who waddle slower and slower through the pasture rotations. As a mom of a two week over due summer kid I can commiserate myself. Hopefully these calves arrive soon before the heat and the flies of high summer arrive.

This group is going into their third week on grass. We’ve changed some things in our grazing plan this year to be better prepared for whatever the weather brings this summer. Longer rotations, moving one big herd between multiple properties to make sure we are able to rest the fields and stock pile grass if it gets dry again.

Nothing like a spring snow to induce calving.

Fresh beef sale in our store. 10 packs of our ground beef for $9.25/lb. Enjoy it fresh, freeze the rest. This beef has never been frozen, came from our organic beef herd, is free from antibiotics, pesticides, fungacides, herbicides and is delicious.

We have finally gotten our sheepskins back from and they are beautiful. We chose to sell our sheep last summer because they stopped staying in the fence and the drought was making us stressed about pasture so these may be the only skins we ever sell but they are soft and gorgeous. I’m glad I made the effort to get them back from the butcher and prep them and get them tanned, I was beginning to question myself when our shed and greenhouse smelled like wet sheep for six weeks but did a great job and I’m happy with the results. More info and pricing on our website in bio above.

A farm year in photos. In these are captured our new year’s fire from last year, it was an epic pile and felt like an exciting start to what would become a challenging year. You will see the slow awakening of our fields and grass and the slow burn as they dried up by early August. You will see us haul water and rotating fields in more and more rapid succession, our wobbly new fall calves keeping up best they can. In November we moved all our cows to our home farm for the winter, a first for us since we used to house half of them across town and a stretch as we test our new systems and learn what we need to change for this year. Despite the multi faceted challenges last year presented we are, like always, overly optimistic for the year ahead. I think it is a trait consistent among farmers especially those in cold climates who have dream of green things when everything is frozen in white. We keep moving forward, pivoting when we need to and adjusting to whatever new reality the season creates for us. Cheers to 2026 and may we all keep finding joy and hope in the little things that pull us through.

The cows are frolicking in this snow like it’s turn out day in May. We are never ready for snow but we try to have as much fun in it as they do when it arrives.
