HBR Beefmaster

HBR Beefmaster New venture for us -- raising beef cattle. Owning a cattle farm has been a dream of Gary's for many years. When that was done, cattle could be added!

Follow our progress as we grow our farm family, and let us know if you want to be on our waiting list for farm-raised beef. It took him 4 years to develop his main pasture area and get it fenced in. Our name came from the name of the spring that is on our l and -- Huckleberry Branch. Huckleberry Branch Ranch seems like a long name, so it got shortened to HBR Beefmaster. Gary wanted to have a breed

that nobody in this area has. We have never seen Beefmaster in this area, so that seemed like a good match. He found an auction in Alabama, and we went in May and purchased our first heifers! So now, we are in business! Follow us as we grow our herd, and sell our heifers and steers.

Two weeks ago, we were dry dry dry! It started raining almost daily. We got home from South Carolina today, took care of all the animals, and as we were finishing, this happened! At least the grass is green and growing.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

These are the cows that started it all. Well, I guess technically that's not true. It all started with a dream and a lot of hard work ...

Life on a farm is never dull or boring! Got awakes at 4:30 this morning by a neighbor informing us that we had calves out. So…off we go to get them back in and “fix” the fence, at least long enough for Gary to REALLY fix it, which will entail replacing field fence with 5-strand Barbed Wire.

On the way out the door, we noticed that some duck eggs we were incubating had hatched out! 8 new baby ducks…8 days early!

Never a dull moment!

The bees in the first two hives are super active this afternoon. The NUC seems quiet today. But excited to see all the activity in the first two hives! Can’t wait to open them
This weekend to see if I can extract a few frames of honey yet!

Checked the hives today. We were hoping to get to put these supers (boxes for the hiney) on top, but we did not see the Queen, and there was no brood in the hive that swarmed last week. We are going to get some advice as to what we need to do to keep that hive along.

The other hive looked pretty good, but I thought it should have had more brood in it than it did. I did see eggs and larvae, so I know there is a queen, but we didn’t see her.

All in all, we are a little disappointed.

The cows were turned out to The Cove pasture a few minutes ago. They are happy!
